Oxford Dictionaries Word of The Year 2013 was selfie; Oxford University Press defines it as, "a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website." So, technically, my photo above is not a selfie since no social media website existed for me to upload it to; it resided in a photo album until today! But wait, I uploaded it today--does that count!? When you do a Google search with the terms 'first selfie', Robert Cornelius's self-portrait in 1839 is mentioned over and over again. When you read the description on The Library of Congress page that shows the photograph, it's easy to understand why more people did not have their portraits done this way--3-15 minutes for proper exposure! |
