When school starts, many teachers, students and parents find they have less time for pleasure reading, but I strongly advocate taking the time to read whatever genre interests you. Right now, I've been enjoying a variety of different blogs, and am reading Catherine the Great by Robert Massie for a book club I belong to in the Netherlands.
If you have a long commute to school or work, consider an audio book. Children in the car? Choose an appropriate one that they can enjoy too! In order to learn how to read fluently, a child needs to hear fluent reading--that is, oral reading with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression.
When I went to school in Baltimore, schools started in September after Labor Day in the U.S. When we moved to Florida in 1995, we discovered that schools there started in August, and it seems like it's earlier every year!
Whether you're back to school this week, or still have one, two, or three weeks of vacation left, have a great new school year!
