Yesterday morning, some time after the 5:30 a.m. sunrise, I heard noises outside our bedroom window. I jumped out of bed, put on my glasses, and grabbed my iPhone. Pulled aside the heavy curtain and saw the cyclists. I looked at the clock on my phone, 7:30 a.m.--these cyclists were tackling either the 110 or 150 km distances of the Toerversie Utrecht! I had wanted to sign up to do the shortest distance, 35 km, for fun, but waited too long to register. This was actually more fun, since I got to see what Stage 2 of the Tour de France (TDF) next Sunday, July 5th would look like from the windows of my home!

Onthaalkerk Onze-Lieve-Vrouw in Bruges, Belgium as viewed from the Belfort. This was my third visit to Bruges, but my first visit up the 366 steps of the Bell Tower. Though I was a little winded by the time I got to the top, I took a deep breath and enjoyed the breathtaking(!) view! My husband and I first visited Bruges with his mother in October 2014. I returned when my three friends from Florida visited in April 2015. Just this weekend, nine of us enjoyed a wonderful weekend in Bruges to celebrate my husband's birthday and Father's Day. I will keep going back again and again to this cozy, inviting town that makes me smile.
Monday morning, 8:30 a.m. Looking through my Instagram feed. First photo was from @mattiasklumofficial. Great photo of frigate birds and orcas. Read the description, and it begins with “Happy #WorldOceanDay!”
I’m extremely flexible, so I tossed my idea for this week’s theme into the future, and decided to go with water—oceans, canals, bays, gulfs, straits, lagoons, rivers, seas and falls! Water was prominent in many of my vacation photos from both North America and Europe. I selected my 15 favorites of the 'flowing stuff' for your enjoyment today, including the one above of the Atlantic Ocean at Jetty Park in Cape Canaveral, Florida in the United States! Travelers, teachers and tourists! When I launched Travel with Mrs. T. on January 5, 2015, this was my intended audience! But as I continued blogging, I realized I wasn't reaching teachers in the way I originally wanted. So, today I'm launching a tandem blog, Travel with Mrs. T. School Edition. If you're not a teacher, keep reading though, since I know many of you are parents of school-aged children, and I bet all of you have at least one teacher friend!
1. Monument Mondriaan by Frank HalmansSpring weather, art, friends, walking, new destination. All the ingredients for an excellent outing! One of my friends had posted an impromptu invitation on Facebook to join her in a walk along the Amersfoort canals to view artwork inspired by the Dutch artist Piet Mondrian. I replied with an excited "I'd love to come," and on Monday, May 4th, four of us searched for pieces by 15 contemporary artists who had interpreted a particular period of Mondrian's work in the 033MONDRIAAN exhibit in Amersfoort. Though the piece above is not part of the temporary exhibition which runs from May 1-October 31, 2015, the abacus design by Frank Halmans was unveiled in front of the Mondrian House on March 7th of this year to commemorate Piet Mondrian's birthday, and was a great place to start our journey.
Reduce, reuse, recycle! We've all heard the phrase, but how much do we follow those commands? When I saw this desk in the Design Museum in Gent, Belgium, I knew I was going to use a photo of it for this blog post (and that was over two months ago)! Since I launched my blog in January, everywhere I go, I have a mental list of things I want to photograph, and great examples of reducing, reusing and recycling are on that list! I knew the exact date of my post; I planned ahead that my Main Event Monday on April 20th was going to be about Earth Day 2015 on April 22nd!
I posted this on Instagram 4 days ago. I first saw the sign in Brussels, Belgium, and since then, I've seen it Gent, Belgium, as well as Dusseldorf, Germany. I wondered where else this sign might be, since I had never seen it in the United States. It got me wondering--how universal are signs?
Can you picture yourself swimming in this little cove? That's me enjoying a quick dip in the water before getting back in my kayak and continuing on one of the most awesome experiences in my life--a kayaking tour with Neil McAra of Kayaking Greece (photo credit: N. McAra)! Efharisto, Neil! If you ever visit Skopelos in Greece, you MUST go on a kayaking adventure with Neil and his team! I've been blogging for three months now, and want to know, what other free travel advice do you need?
